Yathora

The Gita · Chapter 1

Bhagavad Gita 1.22

यावदेतान्निरीक्षेऽहं योद्धुकामानवस्थितान्। कैर्मया सह योद्धव्यमस्मिन्रणसमुद्यमे॥

yāvadetān nirīkṣhe ’haṁ yoddhu-kāmān avasthitān kairmayā saha yoddhavyam asmin raṇa-samudyame

Translation

That I may behold these standing, longing for battle, with whom I must strive in this outbreaking war,

What it means

He wants to behold those "with whom I must strive in this outbreaking war." The word "must" matters: Arjuna already feels the compulsion of duty, yet insists on seeing its face. Duty without examination is mere momentum.

Try this today

Clarity about the cost of a conflict is part of honouring it.

Something to reflect on

Have I looked directly at what my duty will cost, or am I acting on momentum?
