The Gita · Chapter 17

Bhagavad Gita 17.4

यजन्ते सात्त्विका देवान्यक्षरक्षांसि राजसाः।प्रेतान्भूतगणांश्चान्ये यजन्ते तामसा जनाः॥

yajante sāttvikā devān yakṣha-rakṣhānsi rājasāḥ pretān bhūta-gaṇānśh chānye yajante tāmasā janāḥ

Translation

Pure men worship the Gods; the passionate the gnomes and giants; the others, the dark folk, worship ghosts and troops of nature-spirits.

What it means

The sattvic worship the gods; the rajasic worship power-spirits and demons; the tamasic worship ghosts and hordes of nature-spirits. The object of worship diagnoses the worshipper. We pray at the level of our own nature.

Try this today

Devotion routes by type: upward, sideways, downward - the object reveals the worshipper's mode.

Something to reflect on

What does the object of my worship say about my own nature?
