The Gita · Chapter 1

Bhagavad Gita 1.33

येषामर्थे काङ्क्षितं नो राज्यं भोगाः सुखानि च। त इमेऽवस्थिता युद्धे प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा धनानि च॥

yeṣhām arthe kāṅkṣhitaṁ no rājyaṁ bhogāḥ sukhāni cha ta ime ’vasthitā yuddhe prāṇāṁs tyaktvā dhanāni cha

Translation

Those for whose sake we desire kingdom, enjoyments and pleasures, they stand here in battle, abandoning life and riches—

What it means

Those for whose sake kingdom and pleasure are wanted stand here ready to die. Arjuna exposes the contradiction: the war's purpose was the family's welfare, and the war destroys the family. Goals built on a contradiction collapse when examined.

Try this today

The purpose collapses: the very people the victory was for would be destroyed by it.

Something to reflect on

Does the way I pursue my goal harm the very people it is meant to serve?
