Yathora

The Gita · Chapter 1

Bhagavad Gita 1.38

यद्यप्येते न पश्यन्ति लोभोपहतचेतसः। कुलक्षयकृतं दोषं मित्रद्रोहे च पातकम्॥

yady apy ete na paśhyanti lobhopahata-chetasaḥ kula-kṣhaya-kṛitaṁ doṣhaṁ mitra-drohe cha pātakam

Translation

Although these, with intelligence overpowered by greed, see no guilt in the destruction of a family, no crime in hostility to friends,

What it means

Arjuna argues that the Kauravas, blinded by greed, cannot see the crime of destroying a family. Judging others' blindness is easy. The verse sets up the harder question he asks next: what excuse do we have, who claim to see?

Try this today

He diagnoses the other side's moral blindness - caused by greed. Desire for gain is named as what blinds judgment.

Something to reflect on

What desire might be blinding my own judgment right now?
