The Gita · Chapter 11

Bhagavad Gita 11.28

यथा नदीनां बहवोऽम्बुवेगाः समुद्रमेवाभिमुखाः द्रवन्ति। तथा तवामी नरलोकवीरा विशन्ति वक्त्राण्यभिविज्वलन्ति॥

yathā nadīnāṁ bahavo ’mbu-vegāḥ samudram evābhimukhā dravanti tathā tavāmī nara-loka-vīrā viśhanti vaktrāṇy abhivijvalanti

Translation

As river-floods impetuously rush, Hurling their waters into ocean's lap, So fling themselves into Thy flaming mouths, In haste, these mighty men, these lords of earth.

What it means

As the many torrents of rivers rush headlong into the ocean, so these heroes of the human world plunge into Your flaming mouths. The simile makes destruction natural. Rivers do not choose the sea; they are drawn.

Try this today

The river image: the motion looks like choice but runs like gravity.

Something to reflect on

Where in my life does choice actually run like gravity?
