The Gita · Chapter 13

Bhagavad Gita 13.8

इन्द्रियार्थेषु वैराग्यमनहङ्कार एव च।जन्ममृत्युजराव्याधिदुःखदोषानुदर्शनम्॥

indriyārtheṣhu vairāgyam anahankāra eva cha janma-mṛityu-jarā-vyādhi-duḥkha-doṣhānudarśhanam

Translation

Dispassion towards the objects of the senses, and also absence of egoism, insight into the pain and evil of birth, death, old age and sickness,

What it means

Dispassion toward sense objects, absence of egoism, and clear sight of the evil and pain in birth, death, old age and disease. Realism about embodied life is counted as knowledge. Denial of mortality is named ignorance.

Try this today

Clear-eyed seeing of mortality's cost listed as knowledge - not morbidity but accuracy.

Something to reflect on

Have I looked plainly at what embodiment costs - sickness, age, death - without flinching?
