Bhagavad Gita 15.1
ऊर्ध्वमूलमधःशाखमश्वत्थं प्राहुरव्ययम्।छन्दांसि यस्य पर्णानि यस्तं वेद स वेदवित्॥
śhrī-bhagavān uvācha ūrdhva-mūlam adhaḥ-śhākham aśhvatthaṁ prāhur avyayam chhandānsi yasya parṇāni yas taṁ veda sa veda-vit
Translation
The Blessed Lord said: With roots above, branches below, the Asvattha is said to be indestructible; the leaves of it are hymns; he who knoweth it is a Veda-knower.
What it means
They speak of an imperishable Ashvattha tree with roots above and branches below, its leaves the hymns; who knows it knows the Vedas. The world is pictured as an inverted tree: its source is above, its display below. Everything visible grows downward from an unseen root.
Try this today
The inverted tree of existence: roots in the unseen above, branches spreading into the visible world.
Something to reflect on
If my visible life grows downward from an unseen root, what is my root?
