The Gita · Chapter 15

Bhagavad Gita 15.2

अधश्चोर्ध्वं प्रसृतास्तस्य शाखा गुणप्रवृद्धा विषयप्रवालाः।अधश्च मूलान्यनुसन्ततानि कर्मानुबन्धीनि मनुष्यलोके॥

adhaśh chordhvaṁ prasṛitās tasya śhākhā guṇa-pravṛiddhā viṣhaya-pravālāḥ adhaśh cha mūlāny anusantatāni karmānubandhīni manuṣhya-loke

Translation

Downwards and upwards spread the branches of it, nourished by the qualities; the objects of the senses its buds; and its roots grow downwards, the bonds of action in the world of men.

What it means

Its branches spread below and above, fed by the gunas, its buds the sense objects; and its roots stretch downward in the human world as the bonds of action. Karma keeps the tree watered. Our actions grow the very world that cages us.

Try this today

The tree feeds on the three gunas, buds into sense-objects, and roots deeper with every action.

Something to reflect on

What actions of mine are watering the very world that cages me?
