Yathora

The Gita · Chapter 16

Bhagavad Gita 16.17

आत्मसम्भाविताः स्तब्धा धनमानमदान्विताः।यजन्ते नामयज्ञैस्ते दम्भेनाविधिपूर्वकम्॥

ātma-sambhāvitāḥ stabdhā dhana-māna-madānvitāḥ yajante nāma-yajñais te dambhenāvidhi-pūrvakam

Translation

Self-glorifying, stubborn, filled with the pride and intoxication of wealth, they perform lip-sacrifices for ostentation, contrary to scriptural ordinance.

What it means

Self-complacent, stubborn, drunk with wealth and pride, they perform sacrifices in name only, for show, against the rules. Ritual without reverence is named as worse than none. The form of piety becomes a megaphone for the ego.

Try this today

Ritual as theater: the form kept precisely to be seen, the substance discarded.

Something to reflect on

Which of my rituals is performed to be seen?
