The Gita · Chapter 16

Bhagavad Gita 16.18

अहङ्कारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रोधं च संश्रिताः।मामात्मपरदेहेषु प्रद्विषन्तोऽभ्यसूयकाः॥

ahankāraṁ balaṁ darpaṁ kāmaṁ krodhaṁ cha sanśhritāḥ mām ātma-para-deheṣhu pradviṣhanto ’bhyasūyakāḥ

Translation

Given over to egoism, power, insolence, lust and wrath, these malicious ones hate Me in the bodies of others and in their own.

What it means

Given to egoism, force, insolence, lust and anger, these hateful ones despise Me dwelling in the bodies of others and in their own. Contempt for others is described as hatred of the indwelling Divine. Cruelty is a theology before it is a behavior.

Try this today

The endpoint of self-worship: hating the divine precisely where it lives - in everyone including oneself.

Something to reflect on

When I hold others in contempt, what in me am I also despising?
