The Gita · Chapter 17

Bhagavad Gita 17.18

सत्कारमानपूजार्थं तपो दम्भेन चैव यत्।क्रियते तदिह प्रोक्तं राजसं चलमध्रुवम्॥

satkāra-māna-pūjārthaṁ tapo dambhena chaiva yat kriyate tad iha proktaṁ rājasaṁ chalam adhruvam

Translation

The austerity which is practised with the object of gaining respect, honour and worship, and for ostentation, is said to be of passion, unstable and fleeting.

What it means

Austerity practiced to gain respect, honor and worship, and for show, is declared rajasic, unstable and fleeting. Applause is a perishable wage. Discipline built on audience collapses with the audience.

Try this today

Discipline performed for applause: it works briefly, then the audience leaves.

Something to reflect on

What happens to my discipline when the audience leaves?
