The Gita · Chapter 17

Bhagavad Gita 17.20

दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे।देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम्॥

dātavyam iti yad dānaṁ dīyate ‘nupakāriṇe deśhe kāle cha pātre cha tad dānaṁ sāttvikaṁ smṛitam

Translation

That alms given to one who does nothing in return, believing that a gift ought to be made in a fit place and time to a worthy person, that alms is accounted pure.

What it means

A gift given because it should be given, to one who can make no return, at a proper place and time, to a worthy person: that gift is reckoned sattvic. Pure generosity is defined by the absence of leverage. Giving is cleanest when nothing can come back.

Try this today

Sattvic giving: right recipient, right moment, no return address.

Something to reflect on

When did I last give with no return address?
