Bhagavad Gita 17.21
यत्तु प्रत्युपकारार्थं फलमुद्दिश्य वा पुनः।दीयते च परिक्लिष्टं तद्दानं राजसं स्मृतम्॥
yat tu pratyupakārārthaṁ phalam uddiśhya vā punaḥ dīyate cha parikliṣhṭaṁ tad dānaṁ rājasaṁ smṛitam
Translation
That given with a view to receiving in return, or looking for fruit again, or grudgingly, that alms is accounted of passion.
What it means
A gift given expecting return, or with an eye on the fruit, or grudgingly: that is reckoned rajasic. Reluctance is the tell. When giving costs the giver resentment, it was commerce all along.
Try this today
Rajasic giving: the gift as invoice, or given with the hand clenched.
Something to reflect on
Which of my gifts is secretly an invoice?
