The Gita · Chapter 17

Bhagavad Gita 17.6

कर्षयन्तः शरीरस्थं भूतग्राममचेतसः।मां चैवान्तःशरीरस्थं तान्विद्ध्यासुरनिश्चयान्॥

karṣhayantaḥ śharīra-sthaṁ bhūta-grāmam achetasaḥ māṁ chaivāntaḥ śharīra-sthaṁ tān viddhy āsura-niśhchayān

Translation

Unintelligent, tormenting the aggregated elements forming the body, and Me also, seated in the inner body, know these demoniacal in their resolves.

What it means

Senseless, torturing the body's elements and also Me seated within the body: know such people to be of demonic resolve. The body houses the Divine, so abuse of the body is sacrilege. Harshness toward the self is not holiness.

Try this today

Self-torture condemned: harming the body harms the resident within it. Harshness is not holiness.

Something to reflect on

Is any of my discipline actually self-punishment?
