The Gita · Chapter 18

Bhagavad Gita 18.1

संन्यासस्य महाबाहो तत्त्वमिच्छामि वेदितुम्। त्यागस्य च हृषीकेश पृथक्केशिनिषूदन॥

arjuna uvācha sannyāsasya mahā-bāho tattvam ichchhāmi veditum tyāgasya cha hṛiṣhīkeśha pṛithak keśhi-niṣhūdana

Translation

Arjuna said: I desire, O mighty-armed, to know severally the essence of renunciation, O Hrishîkesha, and of relinquishment, O Keshinishûdana.

What it means

Arjuna opens the final chapter with a last request for precision: I wish to know the true nature of renunciation and of relinquishment, each distinctly. Two words often blurred get separated. The Gita ends by defining its terms.

Try this today

The final chapter opens with the last definitional question: renouncing versus relinquishing - two words, one real difference?

Something to reflect on

Do I blur giving-up-the-work with giving-up-the-claim - and which do I actually do?
