Yathora

The Gita · Chapter 2

Bhagavad Gita 2.26

अथ चैनं नित्यजातं नित्यं वा मन्यसे मृतम्। तथापि त्वं महाबाहो नैवं शोचितुमर्हसि॥

atha chainaṁ nitya-jātaṁ nityaṁ vā manyase mṛitam tathāpi tvaṁ mahā-bāho naivaṁ śhochitum arhasi

Translation

Or if thou thinkest of him as being constantly born and constantly dying, even then, O mighty-armed, thou shouldst not grieve.

What it means

Even if you take the self as perpetually born and dying, Krishna says, still you should not grieve. The teaching now argues from the other side's premises too, meeting every worldview on its own ground.

Try this today

Krishna offers a fallback argument for those who do not accept the eternal Self: grief is still not the right response.

Something to reflect on

Can I accept the argument from premises I do not share, just to stop suffering?
