The Gita · Chapter 2

Bhagavad Gita 2.30

देही नित्यमवध्योऽयं देहे सर्वस्य भारत। तस्मात्सर्वाणि भूतानि न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि॥

dehī nityam avadhyo ’yaṁ dehe sarvasya bhārata tasmāt sarvāṇi bhūtāni na tvaṁ śhochitum arhasi

Translation

This dweller in the body of everyone is ever invulnerable, O Bhârata; therefore thou shouldst not grieve for any creature.

What it means

The dweller in every body is forever invulnerable; therefore grieve for no being. Krishna generalizes the teaching from Arjuna's kin to all creatures. Compassion remains, but despair loses its basis.

Try this today

The conclusion of the metaphysical argument: no being's essence can be destroyed, so grief has no final object.

Something to reflect on

Can I care for someone without despairing, if nothing essential in them can be destroyed?
