The Gita · Chapter 2

Bhagavad Gita 2.36

अवाच्यवादांश्च बहून् वदिष्यन्ति तवाहिताः। निन्दन्तस्तव सामर्थ्यं ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्॥

avāchya-vādānśh cha bahūn vadiṣhyanti tavāhitāḥ nindantastava sāmarthyaṁ tato duḥkhataraṁ nu kim

Translation

Many unseemly words will be spoken by thine enemies, slandering thy strength; what more painful than that?

What it means

Your enemies will say unseemly things, belittling your strength; what is more painful? Krishna does not spare Arjuna the social reality. Avoidance buys shame, not peace.

Try this today

The sting of contempt is named plainly. Krishna does not pretend social pain is unreal.

Something to reflect on

Whose contempt am I organizing my life to avoid?
