The Gita · Chapter 3

Bhagavad Gita 3.37

काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भवः। महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम्॥

śhrī bhagavān uvācha kāma eṣha krodha eṣha rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ mahāśhano mahā-pāpmā viddhyenam iha vairiṇam

Translation

The Blessed Lord said: It is desire, it is wrath, begotten by the quality of motion; all-consuming, all-polluting, know thou this as our foe here on earth.

What it means

It is desire, it is anger, born of the quality of rajas: all-devouring, all-polluting. Know this as the enemy here. Craving and rage are one fire in two moods, and it is never satisfied.

Try this today

The diagnosis: the compulsion is desire-anger, an internal force with real power, not a small habit.

Something to reflect on

When my craving is blocked and turns to anger, do I recognize the same fire?
