The Gita · Chapter 3

Bhagavad Gita 3.38

धूमेनाव्रियते वह्निर्यथाऽऽदर्शो मलेन च। यथोल्बेनावृतो गर्भस्तथा तेनेदमावृतम्॥

dhūmenāvriyate vahnir yathādarśho malena cha yatholbenāvṛito garbhas tathā tenedam āvṛitam

Translation

As a flame is enveloped by smoke, as a mirror by dust, as an embryo is wrapped by the amnion, so This is enveloped by it.

What it means

As smoke veils fire, dust a mirror, the womb an embryo, so is wisdom veiled by it. The coverings differ in thickness, but all hide something luminous that was never destroyed.

Try this today

Three degrees of covering: wisdom obscured lightly like smoke on fire, moderately like dust on a mirror, deeply like the womb on the embryo.

Something to reflect on

Is my vision merely smoke-dimmed, dust-filmed, or womb-wrapped - and what clears my kind?
