The Gita · Chapter 4

Bhagavad Gita 4.18

कर्मण्यकर्म यः पश्येदकर्मणि च कर्म यः। स बुद्धिमान् मनुष्येषु स युक्तः कृत्स्नकर्मकृत्॥

karmaṇyakarma yaḥ paśhyed akarmaṇi cha karma yaḥ sa buddhimān manuṣhyeṣhu sa yuktaḥ kṛitsna-karma-kṛit

Translation

He who seeth inaction in action, and action in inaction, he is wise among men, he is harmonious, even while performing all action.

What it means

Who sees inaction in action and action in inaction is wise among humans, integrated, a doer of all action. Sastri records a rival reading and rejects it; the paradox's exact resolution is tradition-sensitive. Shared point: wisdom discerns what really moves in stillness and in act.

Try this today

The paradox at the chapter's core: the detached worker is not inwardly acting; the idle drifter is not inactive. Stillness and motion are not what they look like.

Something to reflect on

Where am I mistaking visible busyness for action, or stillness for passivity?
