The Gita · Chapter 5

Bhagavad Gita 5.1

संन्यासं कर्मणां कृष्ण पुनर्योगं च शंससि। यच्छ्रेय एतयोरेकं तन्मे ब्रूहि सुनिश्िचतम्॥

arjuna uvācha sannyāsaṁ karmaṇāṁ kṛiṣhṇa punar yogaṁ cha śhansasi yach chhreya etayor ekaṁ tan me brūhi su-niśhchitam

Translation

Arjuna said: Renunciation of actions Thou praisest, O Krishna, and then also yoga. Of the two which one is the better? That tell me conclusively.

What it means

Arjuna presses for a verdict: you praise renunciation and you praise yoga of action; which one is better? He wants ranking. Krishna will answer with a hierarchy and then dissolve it.

Try this today

Arjuna presses the apparent contradiction head-on: stop giving me two good answers and name the better one.

Something to reflect on

When I ask which of two good paths is better, am I ready for 'it depends'?
