The Gita · Chapter 6

Bhagavad Gita 6.5

उद्धरेदात्मनाऽऽत्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत्। आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः॥

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ nātmānam avasādayet ātmaiva hyātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ

Translation

Let him raise the self by the Self and not let the self become depressed; for verily is the Self the friend of the self, and also the Self the self's enemy;

What it means

Lift yourself by yourself; do not let yourself sink, for the self alone is the friend of the self, and the self alone is the enemy of the self. No outsourcing of the decisive work. You are both the problem and the rescue.

Try this today

The famous self-reliance verse: you are your own ally or your own saboteur, and the deciding factor is self-governance.

Something to reflect on

In which area am I currently my own enemy?
