The Gita · Chapter 9

Bhagavad Gita 9.21

ते तं भुक्त्वा स्वर्गलोकं विशालं क्षीणे पुण्ये मर्त्यलोकं विशन्ति। एव त्रयीधर्ममनुप्रपन्ना गतागतं कामकामा लभन्ते॥

te taṁ bhuktvā swarga-lokaṁ viśhālaṁ kṣhīṇe puṇye martya-lokaṁ viśhanti evaṁ trayī-dharmam anuprapannā gatāgataṁ kāma-kāmā labhante

Translation

They, having enjoyed the spacious heaven-world, their holiness withered, come back to this world of death. Following the virtues enjoined by the three, desiring desires, they obtain the transitory.

What it means

Having enjoyed that vast heaven, their merit exhausted, they return to the mortal world; desiring desires, following the rites, they come and go. Heaven is a vacation, not a home. What is earned is spent.

Try this today

The reward that depletes: paradise with a balance sheet. What is spent must be re-earned.

Something to reflect on

Which of my rewards am I treating as permanent when it is spendable?
