The Gita · Chapter 1

Bhagavad Gita 1.28

कृपया परयाऽऽविष्टो विषीदन्निदमब्रवीत्। दृष्ट्वेमं स्वजनं कृष्ण युयुत्सुं समुपस्थितम्॥

kṛpayā parayā''viṣṭo viṣīdannidamabravīt dṛṣṭvemaṃ svajanaṃ kṛṣṇa yuyutsuṃ samupasthitam

Translation

Deeply moved to pity, thus uttered in sadness: Arjuna said: Seeing these my kinsmen, O Krishna, arrayed, eager to fight,

What it means

Overcome by pity, Arjuna speaks in sadness: "Seeing these my kinsmen arrayed, eager to fight." His compassion is genuine, and the Gita never mocks it. The argument that follows is not against feeling but against letting feeling alone decide duty.

Try this today

Arjuna's crisis begins with compassion. The Gita takes his feeling seriously before it questions his conclusion.

Something to reflect on

When emotion floods me before a hard task, do I let myself acknowledge it honestly?
