Yathora

The Gita · Chapter 1

Bhagavad Gita 1.45

अहो बत महत्पापं कर्तुं व्यवसिता वयम्। यद्राज्यसुखलोभेन हन्तुं स्वजनमुद्यताः॥

aho bata mahat pāpaṁ kartuṁ vyavasitā vayam yad rājya-sukha-lobhena hantuṁ sva-janam udyatāḥ

Translation

Alas! in committing a great sin are we engaged, we who are endeavouring to kill our kindred from greed of the pleasures of kingship.

What it means

"Alas, we are set on a great sin, from greed for a kingdom's pleasures." Arjuna now confesses the greed belongs to his own side too. It is his most honest moment, and the turning point: moral clarity about the situation is the doorway through which the teaching enters.

Try this today

He names the motive - greed for royal pleasure - in his own side too. Honest self-accusation is rare in a war speech.

Something to reflect on

If I named my real motive out loud, what would it be?
