The Gita · Chapter 11

Bhagavad Gita 11.39

vāyur yamo ’gnir varuṇaḥ śhaśhāṅkaḥ prajāpatis tvaṁ prapitāmahaśh cha namo namas te ’stu sahasra-kṛitvaḥ punaśh cha bhūyo ’pi namo namas te

Translation

Thou art Vâyu and Yama, Agni, moon, Varuna, Father, Grandsire of all; Hail, hail to Thee! a thousand times all hail! Hail unto Thee! again, again all hail!

What it means

You are wind and death and fire and moon and the lord of waters, the first father and the grandsire: hail, hail to You a thousand times, and again, yet again, hail. Enumeration becomes incantation. Language gives up analysis and takes up repetition.

Try this today

The powers named and saluted repeatedly - language exhausting itself in greeting.

Something to reflect on

When does my language give up analysis and become repetition - grief, joy, prayer?
