The Gita · Chapter 12

Bhagavad Gita 12.18

समः शत्रौ च मित्रे च तथा मानापमानयोः।शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः सङ्गविवर्जितः॥

samaḥ śhatrau cha mitre cha tathā mānāpamānayoḥ śhītoṣhṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣhu samaḥ saṅga-vivarjitaḥ

Translation

Alike to foe and friend, and also in fame and ignominy, alike in cold and heat, pleasures and pains, destitute of attachment,

What it means

Equal to foe and friend, in honor and dishonor, in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, free of attachment. The opposites are run through again at the level of reputation and body. Nothing on the outside is allowed to set the temperature inside.

Try this today

The pairs of opposites applied to people and reputation: evenness across the social and the physical.

Something to reflect on

Which opposite still sets my inner temperature - people's verdicts or my body's comfort?
