The Gita · Chapter 14

Bhagavad Gita 14.24

समदुःखसुखः स्वस्थः समलोष्टाश्मकाञ्चनः।तुल्यप्रियाप्रियो धीरस्तुल्यनिन्दात्मसंस्तुतिः॥

sama-duḥkha-sukhaḥ sva-sthaḥ sama-loṣhṭāśhma-kāñchanaḥ tulya-priyāpriyo dhīras tulya-nindātma-sanstutiḥ

Translation

Balanced in pleasure and pain, self-reliant, to whom a lump of earth, a rock and gold are alike, the same to loved and unloved, firm, the same in censure and in praise,

What it means

Balanced in pleasure and pain, self-abiding, for whom earth, stone and gold are equal, the same in pleasant and unpleasant, firm, the same in blame and praise. Equality is detailed across possessions, people and reputation. Nothing external gets a vote.

Try this today

The equanimity inventory: valuation flattened across things, people and verdicts.

Something to reflect on

Across things, people and verdicts - which still gets a vote in me?
