The Gita · Chapter 14

Bhagavad Gita 14.9

सत्त्वं सुखे सञ्जयति रजः कर्मणि भारत।ज्ञानमावृत्य तु तमः प्रमादे सञ्जयत्युत॥

sattvaṁ sukhe sañjayati rajaḥ karmaṇi bhārata jñānam āvṛitya tu tamaḥ pramāde sañjayaty uta

Translation

Harmony attacheth to bliss, Motion to action O Bharata. Inertia, verily, having shrouded wisdom, attacheth on the contrary to heedlessness.

What it means

Sattva attaches to happiness, rajas to action, and tamas, shrouding knowledge, attaches to heedlessness. Each guna has its hook: pleasure, motion, and numbness. The same self wears all three chains by turns.

Try this today

Each quality has its hook: pleasure, busyness, fog.

Something to reflect on

Which hook catches me most - pleasure, motion or numbness?
