The Gita · Chapter 16

Bhagavad Gita 16.12

आशापाशशतैर्बद्धाः कामक्रोधपरायणाः।ईहन्ते कामभोगार्थमन्यायेनार्थसञ्चयान्॥

āśhā-pāśha-śhatair baddhāḥ kāma-krodha-parāyaṇāḥ īhante kāma-bhogārtham anyāyenārtha-sañchayān

Translation

Held in bondage by a hundred ties of expectation, given over to lust and anger, they strive to obtain by unlawful means hoards of wealth for sensual enjoyments.

What it means

Bound by a hundred snares of hope, given to lust and anger, they seek unjust hoards of wealth for the gratification of desire. Expectation is described as bondage, a hundred ropes at once. The striving never rests because the goalpost is the self.

Try this today

Expectation as rope: a hundred threads of 'when I get X' binding one person.

Something to reflect on

How many 'when I get X' threads are currently tied to my peace?
