The Gita · Chapter 16

Bhagavad Gita 16.24

तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ।ज्ञात्वा शास्त्रविधानोक्तं कर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि॥

tasmāch chhāstraṁ pramāṇaṁ te kāryākārya-vyavasthitau jñātvā śhāstra-vidhānoktaṁ karma kartum ihārhasi

Translation

Therefore let the Scriptures be thy authority, in determining what ought to be done, or what ought not to be done. Knowing what hath been declared by the ordinances of the Scriptures, thou oughtest to work in this world.

What it means

Therefore let scripture be your authority in knowing what should and should not be done; knowing its ordinances, act here. The chapter ends by assigning a referee. When desire argues one way and wisdom another, a standard outside both must rule.

Try this today

Chapter 16 closes with a decision procedure: when impulse and duty conflict, consult the standard, not the urge.

Something to reflect on

When my urge and my duty argue, what standard outside both do I consult?
