The Gita · Chapter 18

Bhagavad Gita 18.8

दुःखमित्येव यत्कर्म कायक्लेशभयात्त्यजेत्।स कृत्वा राजसं त्यागं नैव त्यागफलं लभेत्॥

duḥkham ity eva yat karma kāya-kleśha-bhayāt tyajet sa kṛitvā rājasaṁ tyāgaṁ naiva tyāga-phalaṁ labhet

Translation

He who relinquisheth an action from fear of physical suffering, saying "Painful," thus performing a passionate relinquishment, obtaineth not the fruit of relinquishment.

What it means

Who abandons action from fear of bodily trouble, thinking "it is painful," performs rajasic relinquishment and does not gain relinquishment's fruit. Quitting because it hurts earns nothing. Comfort was never the point of the path.

Try this today

Quitting because it hurts is rajas: comfort-seeking dressed as renunciation earns nothing.

Something to reflect on

Which of my 'letting go' decisions was really 'avoiding pain'?
