The Gita · Chapter 18

Bhagavad Gita 18.9

कार्यमित्येव यत्कर्म नियतं क्रियतेऽर्जुन।सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा फलं चैव स त्यागः सात्त्विको मतः॥

kāryam ity eva yat karma niyataṁ kriyate ‘rjuna saṅgaṁ tyaktvā phalaṁ chaiva sa tyāgaḥ sāttviko mataḥ

Translation

He who performeth a prescribed action, saying, "it ought to be done," O Arjuna, relinquishing attachment and also fruit, that relinquishment is regarded as pure.

What it means

Who performs prescribed action saying only "it should be done," abandoning attachment and fruit: that relinquishment is reckoned sattvic. Duty without debate is the pure form. The cleanest reason to act is that the act is right.

Try this today

Sattvic relinquishment defined: full performance, zero claim. The duty done because it is duty.

Something to reflect on

What do I do for no better reason than that it should be done?
