Yathora

The Gita · Chapter 2

Bhagavad Gita 2.22

वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि। तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णा न्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही॥

vāsānsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya navāni gṛihṇāti naro ’parāṇi tathā śharīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇānya nyāni sanyāti navāni dehī

Translation

As a man, casting off worn-out garments, taketh new ones, so the dweller in the body, casting off worn-out bodies, entereth into others that are new.

What it means

As a person casts off worn clothes and takes new ones, so the Self casts off worn bodies. The familiar image makes death ordinary. What is worn out is replaced; the wearer remains.

Try this today

A celebrated image for death: a change of clothes, not an execution.

Something to reflect on

What am I mourning that is really a change of clothes?
