Yathora

The Gita · Chapter 2

Bhagavad Gita 2.58

यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वशः। इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस्तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता॥

yadā sanharate chāyaṁ kūrmo ’ṅgānīva sarvaśhaḥ indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyas tasya prajñā pratiṣhṭhitā

Translation

When, again, as a tortoise draws in on all sides its limbs, he withdraws his senses from the objects of sense, then is his understanding well poised.

What it means

As a tortoise draws in its limbs from every side, the wise one withdraws the senses from their objects; understanding stands poised. Sense control is presented as a natural capacity, not violence.

Try this today

The tortoise image: deliberate sensory withdrawal as a trainable skill, not repression.

Something to reflect on

What is my tortoise-move - the reliable way I withdraw from stimulation?
