The Gita · Chapter 3

Bhagavad Gita 3.42

इन्द्रियाणि पराण्याहुरिन्द्रियेभ्यः परं मनः। मनसस्तु परा बुद्धिर्यो बुद्धेः परतस्तु सः॥

indriyāṇi parāṇyāhur indriyebhyaḥ paraṁ manaḥ manasas tu parā buddhir yo buddheḥ paratas tu saḥ

Translation

It is said that the senses are great; greater than the senses is the mind: greater than the mind is the Reason; but what is greater than the Reason, is He.

What it means

The senses are said to be great; greater is the mind; greater than the mind is the intellect; greater than the intellect is He, the Self. The Gita maps our inner hierarchy. Knowing the chain of command tells you where to appeal.

Try this today

The hierarchy of faculties: senses < mind < reason < the Self. Self-mastery means governing from the highest available floor.

Something to reflect on

From which floor am I governing my life right now - senses, mind, reason, or deeper?
