The Gita · Chapter 4

Bhagavad Gita 4.1

इमं विवस्वते योगं प्रोक्तवानहमव्ययम्। विवस्वान् मनवे प्राह मनुरिक्ष्वाकवेऽब्रवीत्॥

śhrī bhagavān uvācha imaṁ vivasvate yogaṁ proktavān aham avyayam vivasvān manave prāha manur ikṣhvākave ’bravīt

Translation

The Blessed Lord said: This imperishable yoga I declared to Vivasvân; Vivasvân taught it to Manu; Manu to Ikshvâku told it.

What it means

Krishna traces the lineage: this yoga was taught to Vivasvan, then Manu, then Ikshvaku. The teaching is presented not as new but as renewed. Truth here is an inheritance, periodically restored.

Try this today

Krishna opens the chapter by tracing the teaching's lineage - presenting it as ancient, transmitted wisdom, not a new invention.

Something to reflect on

Which of my strongest practices do I know the lineage of?
