The Gita · Chapter 4

Bhagavad Gita 4.13

चातुर्वर्ण्यं मया सृष्टं गुणकर्मविभागशः। तस्य कर्तारमपि मां विद्ध्यकर्तारमव्ययम्॥

chātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛiṣhṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśhaḥ tasya kartāram api māṁ viddhyakartāram avyayam

Translation

The four castes were emanated by Me, by the different distribution of qualities and actions; know Me to be the author of them, though the actionless and inexhaustible.

What it means

The four orders were created by Me according to the distribution of qualities and actions; know Me as their author, though actionless and inexhaustible. Social function flows from inner constitution. The maker of the system stands outside it.

Try this today

Categories arise from dispositions and work, not birth alone; the author of the system stands outside it.

Something to reflect on

Do I sort people by birth and label, or by disposition and work?
