The Gita · Chapter 4

Bhagavad Gita 4.15

एवं ज्ञात्वा कृतं कर्म पूर्वैरपि मुमुक्षुभिः। कुरु कर्मैव तस्मात्त्वं पूर्वैः पूर्वतरं कृतम्॥

evaṁ jñātvā kṛitaṁ karma pūrvair api mumukṣhubhiḥ kuru karmaiva tasmāttvaṁ pūrvaiḥ pūrvataraṁ kṛitam

Translation

Having thus known, our forefathers, ever seeking liberation, performed action; therefore do thou also perform action, as did our forefathers in the olden time.

What it means

Knowing this, the ancient seekers of liberation still performed action; so act as they did. The ancestors are cited as precedent: enlightenment never required quitting the work of the world.

Try this today

The precedent argument: understanding never excused anyone from work - it fueled their work.

Something to reflect on

If understanding never excused my ancestors from work, why would it excuse me?
