The Gita · Chapter 4

Bhagavad Gita 4.37

यथैधांसि समिद्धोऽग्निर्भस्मसात्कुरुतेऽर्जुन। ज्ञानाग्निः सर्वकर्माणि भस्मसात्कुरुते तथा॥

yathaidhānsi samiddho ’gnir bhasma-sāt kurute ’rjuna jñānāgniḥ sarva-karmāṇi bhasma-sāt kurute tathā

Translation

As the burning fire reduces fuel to ashes, O Arjuna, so doth the fire of wisdom reduce all actions to ashes.

What it means

As a blazing fire turns fuel to ashes, the fire of knowledge turns all karma to ashes. Sastri qualifies: the karma already bearing fruit (prarabdha) must still be lived out; knowledge burns the rest. It does not negotiate with the past.

Try this today

Understanding does not manage the residue of the past; it incinerates it.

Something to reflect on

What past residue am I trying to manage that understanding would simply burn?
