The Gita · Chapter 6

Bhagavad Gita 6.16

नात्यश्नतस्तु योगोऽस्ति न चैकान्तमनश्नतः। न चातिस्वप्नशीलस्य जाग्रतो नैव चार्जुन॥

nātyaśhnatastu yogo ’sti na chaikāntam anaśhnataḥ na chāti-svapna-śhīlasya jāgrato naiva chārjuna

Translation

Verily yoga is not for him who eateth too much, nor who abstaineth to excess, nor who is too much addicted to sleep, nor even to wakefulness, O Arjuna.

What it means

Yoga is not for one who eats too much or too little, nor for one who sleeps too much or stays awake too long. Extremes disqualify. The middle is not mediocrity here; it is the operating condition for the mind.

Try this today

The moderation verse: extremes in either direction break the practice. Ascetic showmanship fails as reliably as indulgence.

Something to reflect on

Where is my 'discipline' actually an extreme that breaks consistency?
