Yathora

The Gita · Chapter 6

Bhagavad Gita 6.19

यथा दीपो निवातस्थो नेङ्गते सोपमा स्मृता। योगिनो यतचित्तस्य युञ्जतो योगमात्मनः॥

yathā dīpo nivāta-stho neṅgate sopamā smṛitā yogino yata-chittasya yuñjato yogam ātmanaḥ

Translation

As a lamp in a windless place flickereth not, to such is likened the Yogî of subdued thought, absorbed in the yoga of the Self.

What it means

As a lamp in a windless place does not flicker: that is the image of the yogi's disciplined mind absorbed in the Self. The classic simile of stillness. The light is unchanged; only the disturbance is removed.

Try this today

The still-flame image: stability is not rigidity but the absence of disturbance.

Something to reflect on

Where is my windless place - the conditions under which I do not flicker?
