Yathora

The Gita · Chapter 6

Bhagavad Gita 6.32

आत्मौपम्येन सर्वत्र समं पश्यति योऽर्जुन। सुखं वा यदि वा दुःखं सः योगी परमो मतः॥

ātmaupamyena sarvatra samaṁ paśhyati yo ’rjuna sukhaṁ vā yadi vā duḥkhaṁ sa yogī paramo mataḥ

Translation

He who, through the likeness of the Self, O Arjuna, seeth equality in everything, whether pleasant or painful, he is considered a perfect Yogî.

What it means

Who, by comparison with oneself, sees the same everywhere, in pleasure or in pain: that yogi is deemed perfect. Empathy is given as the practical proof of unity: others' experiences register as one's own.

Try this today

Empathy formalized: measure others' joy and pain by your own, and treat them alike.

Something to reflect on

When did I last test my reaction against 'what if this were me'?
