The Gita · Chapter 7

Bhagavad Gita 7.20

कामैस्तैस्तैर्हृतज्ञानाः प्रपद्यन्तेऽन्यदेवताः। तं तं नियममास्थाय प्रकृत्या नियताः स्वया॥

kāmais tais tair hṛita-jñānāḥ prapadyante ’nya-devatāḥ taṁ taṁ niyamam āsthāya prakṛityā niyatāḥ svayā

Translation

They whose wisdom hath been rent away by desires go forth to other Shining Ones, resorting to various external observances, according to their own natures.

What it means

Those whose wisdom is carried away by desires go to other deities, observing various rites, led by their own natures. Lesser goals choose lesser altars. The Gita does not mock this; it simply notes the trade.

Try this today

Desire-drafted worship: people pick the deity that matches the want. Described without contempt.

Something to reflect on

Which altar does my strongest desire push me toward?
