The Gita · Chapter 7

Bhagavad Gita 7.5

अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम्। जीवभूतां महाबाहो ययेदं धार्यते जगत्॥

apareyam itas tvanyāṁ prakṛitiṁ viddhi me parām jīva-bhūtāṁ mahā-bāho yayedaṁ dhāryate jagat

Translation

This the inferior. Know My other nature, the higher, the life-element, O mighty-armed, by which the universe is upheld.

What it means

This is the inferior; know My other, higher nature, the life-element by which the universe is held up. Beyond matter stands consciousness itself. The world is not self-running; it is held.

Try this today

Beyond the eight materials stands the animating principle itself: life is not one of the ingredients but what upholds them.

Something to reflect on

What animates my life that is not itself one of its ingredients?
