The Gita · Chapter 8

Bhagavad Gita 8.19

भूतग्रामः स एवायं भूत्वा भूत्वा प्रलीयते। रात्र्यागमेऽवशः पार्थ प्रभवत्यहरागमे॥

bhūta-grāmaḥ sa evāyaṁ bhūtvā bhūtvā pralīyate rātryāgame ’vaśhaḥ pārtha prabhavatyahar-āgame

Translation

This multitude of beings, going forth repeatedly, is dissolved at the coming of night: by ordination, O Pârtha, it streams forth at the coming of day.

What it means

This same multitude of beings, arising again and again, dissolves helplessly at nightfall and streams forth at daybreak. Recurrence is impersonal; no one is consulted. Only one thing breaks the cycle, named next.

Try this today

The repetitiveness of cosmic process: beings cycle through by ordinance, not by choice.

Something to reflect on

Where am I carried by processes that never consulted me?
