The Gita · Chapter 9

Bhagavad Gita 9.16

अहं क्रतुरहं यज्ञः स्वधाऽहमहमौषधम्। मंत्रोऽहमहमेवाज्यमहमग्निरहं हुतम्॥

ahaṁ kratur ahaṁ yajñaḥ svadhāham aham auṣhadham mantro ’ham aham evājyam aham agnir ahaṁ hutam

Translation

I the ablation; I the sacrifice; I the ancestral offering; I the fire-giving herb; the mantram I; I also the butter; I the fire; the burnt-offering I;

What it means

I am the rite, I the sacrifice, I the offering to the ancestors, the healing herb, the mantra, the clarified butter, the fire, the very act of offering. Every element of worship is identified with the worshipped. Nothing in the ritual is secular.

Try this today

Every element of ritual identified with the divine: actor, action, instrument and recipient are one.

Something to reflect on

If every element of my daily ritual were sacred, which would shame me?
